RICHARD II

Directed by L. Peter Callender
In a modern verse translation by Naomi Iizuka

Richard II is an imaginative retelling of power, corruption, and fall from grace. A new modern verse translated by Naomi Iizuka chronicles the drama of King Richard as a memory play, where the drama begins at the end and works its way forward retelling this tragic tale.

African-American Shakespeare Company’s Artistic Director L. Peter Callender brings a fresh take on the oft-told tale of this theatrical masterpiece.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Welcome back to live theater!

The masks we wear are seldom those of our own conjuring. The “debt we pay to human guile” stretches far beyond our own pain and desires, far beyond our suffering and regrets. The masks we wear are often to reflect how we see ourselves or, more critically, how we want others to see us. Even narrower: how we see others with whom we are associated–for better or worse. Our determination is always to “unmask falsehood and bring truth to light”. While we all sat in somber penance in our rooms over the past eternal months, we have all had time to think on our lives–the good, the bad, and the ugly. Through our sometimey memory and childish imagination, we have peopled our spaces, pushed “play”, and perhaps wished for better outcomes, or a life returned, or, even more immediate, a life relived! That is RICHARD! In this production, we begin with the end, and journey through the mind of a narcissistic king who seeks redemption. We see life and behavior as he remembers them. The use of theatrical comedia masks illustrates how memory can be warped when we “call back yesterday, [and] bid time return”, but Time is a fickle friend, and the mirror in which we see ourselves has its own way of reflecting truth. Lean forward. Be engaged. The time we spend with others, as we all have learned, is very precious.

TONY ORTEGA

I train every day and find inspiration in my craft by observing the world around me. I trained under several amazing artists in my life. When I was at San Jose State I observed the late Buddy Butler and Dr. Donna Mendoza. I have studied the Meisner technique under Jim Jarret and Matt Shelton. I learn by playing alongside amazing artists. My mentors are currently professionals that play at the SF Playhouse, CalShakes, AASC, and other great institutions in the Bay Area. My craft keeps evolving and I’m still a student in the beautiful artform of Acting.
